Moving to Dallas

As you may have previously read, I recently left my previous employer of 4.27 years and somehow managed to convince the kind folk at Telligent that I would be a good fit there. Well my wife and I decided that wasn't enough change for one family, and we should move across the country as well. This has actually been in the works for a while now, but I wanted to make sure family members and current/past co-workers knew before I announced it to the world (err, I mean my one reader) on this blog. Megan, Mackenzie, and I are moving from the tiny hamlet of Delaware to Dallas at the end of July!

Although it will be difficult moving away from our many good friends and family in the Philly area, we decided to move for several reasons:

  • First, I will be able to work in Telligent's world-wide headquarters located in North Dallas. I am looking forward to being able to finally meet many of my co-workers in person for the first time and work with them in person every day.
  • Second, Dallas is somewhere we would both like to live. It is one of the fastest growing and vibrant cities in the country right now, and amazingly housing prices there are still very cheap because of the large amount of open land. I have been looking at houses there, and we can get so much more for our money compared to the over-priced Delaware/Philly/NJ metropolitan area. And with all of the major companies that are based in the Dallas-FortWorth-Plano metroplex, we hopefully shouldn't have a too hard a time finding Megan a good career there that she will enjoy and excel in. I have had the good fortune of being able to live in both Florida and Delaware at this point in my life, and am excited to experience Texas now.
  • Third, we both have family connections to Dallas. My brother Greg and sister-in-law Iris used to live there - that is where that they got married and my nephew Matthew was born. While they moved to Florida last year, Iris still has family there. My wife's step-sister Sabrina and her family live in Arlington, and Megan's father and brother have also just decided to follow us to Dallas and give it a try to see if they like the area.

So we are going on vacation to Dallas the week of July 3rd to the 9th to visit Megan's sister, my co-workers, and of course look for a place to live! At this point, we are planning on renting a house for a year to give us time to get a feel for the area and look for a place to buy or build. And then we will be packing our bags and wagons and heading west for good the third or fourth week of July!

Oh my Gosh! You're moving to DALLAS?????

Dude, you have the golden opportunity to work from home and you want to work at HQ?

Hey, I can see wanting to do that with a great company like Telligent. If that's what you think is best, then I wish you the very best.

You need to give teleworking a chance though, pal. Once you do it for a while you can never go back.

congrats on making the move, man! You're going to LOVE dallas... I live in Waco, but work in downtown Dallas. lemme tell ya... Dallas is NOT really Texas. Dallas is more like California's silicon valley with better housing prices, and hotter weather. Make sure you visit Ft. Worth and head to the stockyards - that's texas. :)

and if you ever need someone to hang around outside of your amazing co-workers, just give me a jingle through my website. we'll hook up for lunch or something. :) you also goota start going to the geek gatherings that are organized by addressof.com. They're fun.

Thanks for the good wishes guys!

Dave, as crazy as it sounds, over long periods I enjoy working in an office more than at home. Of course then again maybe I should try working at home next to a beautiful lake & forest in Vermont. =)

Derick, thanks for the description! From everything I have heard so far, Dallas does sounds like a cowboy version of Silicon Valley! I am very excited to move there, and will definitely start going to the geek gatherings and will give you a buzz. There are no geek gatherings in Delaware, so that's something I'm looking forward to as well.

As we spoke last week, this is an extension of an already excellent opportunity. I am glad to hear that everything is falling into place for you and hopefully you will find a good dwelling when you are down there this week.

Enjoy the warm weather - Delaware will miss you guys!
